Sick Day Movies

The Sound of Music is currently playing on ABC Family, so it made me think back in the day to what movies I loved to watch when I stayed home sick from school. I don't want my readers to think that I stayed home from school often because I swear that I didn't!! Just ask my Mom....she would tell me that I really should stay home from school, but I wanted the perfect attendance award. In 5th grade, I eventually had to succumb to my strep throat and stay home from school. I loyally performed my crossing guard duties the day before I stayed home though and even had to walk home uphill in the rain that day!! I think my temperature was like 105, but I had to make sure that the 1st graders crossed the street safely!! There was no perfect attendance award for me that year!

Ok...back on topic...does anyone else have memories of the movies they loved to watch on sick days?!? Todd always watched the Star Wars trilogy. He had a lot more sick days than I ever had...love you Boy-boy!!

Here are my favorite sick day movies:
  • The Sound of Music
  • Mr. Mom
  • Rags to Riches (I think I am the only person in America who has watched this made-for- TV movie over and over again!! My Dad taped it on a VHS tape for me, so I was in heaven!!)
  • Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
  • Annie
  • Little Women (the cartoon version! I totally want to find this version, but I can't!!)
  • The Last Unicorn
  • The Flight of the Dragons

Since we're on the topic of school, I would also like to discuss the Jerry Lewis Telethon. I always kind of dreaded this TV event because it meant that the school year had just begun! My parents and I have this joke about Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme!! I think that both Steve and Eydie are still kicking it! I wish I was in Amarillo watching the Telethon with them!! Maybe I'll TiVo the Telethon just so I can see the Steve and Eydie performance since I must labor on Labor Day!! I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend!!

there are so many things on this post that make me wonder if we can continue to be friends. let's see if i can recall them all...

1. you were a crossing guard?! wait, you were a crossing guard AND you refused to go home sick until you had performed your crossing guard duties?! oh my. as the daughter of a teacher, i would have given anything to have a mother tell me to stay home sick. alas, i had to put on a powerful performance of illness in order to stay home. and, let's just say that if i got the green light, i would not have thought twice about my duties. plus, you WANTED the perfect attendance award?! you are too holy to be my friend.

2. as a child who grew up ten miles out in the country with no cable, i dreaded the jerry lewis telethon. it meant nothing to watch for 24-hours straight since the channel that it aired on was the only one we got besides pbs. and the only thing worse than jerry lewis was lawrence welk. i know this because my grandparents loved them some lawrence welk. and the thought that you might dvr it, even for nostalgic purposes, might just certify our non-compatibility. :)

however...
i know of few people who heart the cartoon version of "little women" as i did. finding out that information might have given our friendship hope. any later movie version(s) could not compare to the heart-stopping moments of cartoon beth's comeback from the brink of death.

and, well, you included "annie." as a fellow redhead, there are few hollywood idols to whom i can relate. annie runs a close second to THE molly ringwald.

so, i guess our friendship is still tentative...you got anymore shocking info for me? :)

GIRL--HOW HAVE WE NEVER DISCUSSED RAGS TO RICHES BEFORE?!?!

Or have we? I can't remember.

I can still remember the theme song.

OK, on to sick day movies...

I'm going to have to come back to this because Sarah Palin is speaking at the RNC right now, but there is much more where that came from.

I only remember watching my mom's CBS soaps on sick days. I still try to keep up with the Young and the Restless because of it.
